Summary

Average. Behind its spangly new styling Saabs old stager is pretty much as before - great at distances but little fun over a twisty road.

Styling

We think the new design is trying too hard to be different - although the fundamental shape remains pleasing enough, especially in attractively chunky SportCombi estate form.

Handling

Still no match for its premium-badged German rivals. More powerful versions are quick to overwhelm the front tyres grip if you try to press on.

Comfort

It gets a bit noisy at cruising speeds - but theres no better place to spend serious motorway time than a Saab front seat.

Quality

The new dashboard looks and feels better than the old one, but theres still too much cheap switchgear - while the exterior paint finish of our test cars was disappointingly poor.

Performance

Theres no arguing with the 9-5s performance. Even the most basic 2.0t gives decent pace, while the range-topping Aero is a middle-class rocketship. The new 1.9 diesel has plenty of overtaking punch, too.

Roominess

Theres good room front and rear, although the drivers footwell is slightly cramped. Good boot space on both the saloon and estate, with a range of optional

Costs

The petrol versions are thirsty under anything but the most gentle use and depreciation will be far steeper than German rivals.

Value

Decent equipment levels make the 9-5 look like reasonable value. Its also one of the safest cars in the world according to the highly regarded Swedish Folksam test.

Stereo

New range of stereos give decent sound quality. The satnav display isnt the best looking, but touch screen control makes it easy to use and it also features TMC to help avoid traffic queues.
