Average. Cool looking Focus competitor that offers lots of VFM - but which is pretty average on everything else.

Styling

Angular and futuristic - the C4 benefits from far bolder design than the rest of the Citroen range. Only question is how good it will look in five years time...

Handling

Respectable, if unmemorable driving experience combines reasonable comfort with a decent impression of enthusiasm in the corners.

Comfort

The driving position is good over longer journeys but motorway cruising is marred by excessive road noise.

Quality

Some bits of the cabin feel very low rent, but the main quality concern is with niggling faults on early examples...

Performance

We cant see much of a case for the distinctly average petrol engines (other than price), but the diesels are brilliant.

Roominess

Front seat occupants have plenty of room but it feels tight in the back, with access to the rear seats very awkward in the three-door version.

Costs

One of the more cost effective family hatchbacks to run thanks to competitive insurance groups, reasonably priced servicing and - with the diesels - excellent fuel economy. Relatively poor residuals are partially as a result of the high discounts given...

Value

The C4s official list price looks high compared to rivals spec-for-spec. Fortunately the companys famed willingness to offer discounts means the screen sticker is just where the bidding starts...

Stereo

The audio system gives plenty of good quality sounds. Satnav is fiddly to operate but works well once youve got it programmed.
